Chapter 24
A Letter from a Sister
Being back in my old room feels strange and odd. I trail my fingers along the vanity and my bed. Nearly everything is as I left it, not a single thing out of place.
Now it feels large for one person and two small beings, as the King and I will no longer be sharing a bed, much less a room. Again, an invisible wall seems to have been resurrected between us. I miss the intimacy of those days when we shared the same small room along with our babies.
It makes me feel lonely, though this emotion is fleeting when I hear the familiar rushed footsteps heading in my direction. The doors are thrown open by Catherine. She is quick to encase me in a tight hug. âMy lady, you have been gone for far too long. I am so glad to see you and happy to serve you again. Did you put on a little weight?â
Ava is the next to enter the room, and I can hear her hold back her pants. She mutters under her breath. âHow in the afterskies did you beat me here?â A small hmph escapes her lips as she collects herself, then speaks more clearly, her words well pronounced. âYouâre the one to talk. She just gave birth to two boys. Whatâs your excuse other than the Orc feeding you too much?â
Catherine pulls away from the brief hug. âOh Ava, quiet, will you? I am just joking. She looks quite lovely. Healthy, in fact.â
âYes, I suppose so. I will probably need to lose a bit of weight,â I note, recalling how much I was eating during the pregnancy and how far it exceeded the amount I normally ate.
âI can help with that. Just a few tight corsets, walks around the castle grounds, fewer bread and sweets, and you will be back in shape in no time.â Ava is always happy to help with this, being always the one to brag about her narrow waist and how she could get just about anyone to lose weight, except for our dear old Catherine.
âHush. None of these silly things matter. Letâs see the tiny babes.â Catherine takes the basket away from me and brings the twins over to the new crib that was made while we were away. âTheyâre very cute. This one looks just like our King. His nose and mouth. And that hair.â
I can see a tiny blob of magic being lifted, and I walk up to her, not sure what to make of my maidâs excitement. One of them is touching my babies, but I allow it. For now. Orval did say I should be the only one to care for them. âYes. His name is Uraloki.â
âAnd the other oneâs name? Did you name them, or did the King break tradition?â Ava asks, walking over to the basket to touch the other twin. âThis one seems to be Theka like us.â
âHis name is Onnalth and we can assume him to be a Theka, though I hear some donât have magic until they reach a certain age.
